In biological terms, a community is a group of interacting species sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.

In sociology, the concept of community has led to significant debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community.

The word "community" is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas (cum, "with/together" + munus, "gift"), a broad term for fellowship or organized society.

Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location.

What kind of community causes do you donate your time and/or money to and why?
Q. I work for a non-profit agency that works with people of all ages and abilities. We are trying to raise money for a state of the art facility for a preschool, k-12 school, 4 adult day habilitation programs, children s case management, developmental therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and a greenhouse work program for adults, as well as community gardens, and a handicap accessible playground for the community. To better our community by increasing the abilities of the most disabled people in our community so they contribute to the community (and have an income), and provide a play/picnic area for all families and children of all abilities. I am wondering what people donate to and why. It seems that there are… [cont.]

A. First of all, who are you to say that animal shelters & parks are not as worthy/needy of funding as your program? People donate to non-profits that directly effect their own lives. I donate $$ to my local community radio station. It might not seem like priority to you, but it is to me b/c I listen to that station everyday & my life would be empty without it. I also donate my time to Big Brothers Big Sisters, because it's an established, well-known organization and I am directly involved in the life of my Little Sister. Perhaps you need to publicize your organization more. Issue press releases about the work that you're doing, start a direct mail campaign, have regular events (bake sales, car washes, concerts) to get the word out. The… [cont.]

How do community newspapers get nice letters from the Mayor, and political leaders in their district?
Q. How can a community newspaper generate supportive letters from their community leaders for publishing? How would such a letter be written? Would they ask for a specific response? Should they start on the top of the ladder and go for it? How does a community newspaper hit a home run and land an interview from a well known politician?

A. The City Council pays top dollar for advertising and then get nice reviews from the owner of the newspaper.. If City Council decided to use another newspaper or changed the medium [Internet] to advertise. Then the newspaper will come out and say the mayor doesn't know what she/he doing ,their wasting tax payers money etc etc etc So everything stays the same. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours...lol

What can the community do to better prepare for terrorist attacks?
Q. I believe its just a matter of time before terrorist start targeting our schools, community, religious institutions and the like. I know airports, military and state institutions are taking all kinds of defensive and offensive measures. What can the community, students, and families start doing to prepare for this?

A. First of all, read and learn what your government has been doing to you. Try to find the causes of the attacks and you will know what to do to prevent them. Participate, in your community and in a larger scale, to request the government to stop its abusive foreign policy, and to negotiate -its way of out Irak, Afghanistan, its support to Israel, Darfur, Somalia, its violence towards Palestinians, etc. I could go on for ages. It's violence against communism and everything that doesn't stand for the "American way of life", the open markets, consumption, etc. Only with equality, social and economical, with respect for different cultures, they will succeed against terrorism. Or yes, close all borders, and make sure Bush, Condi, Dick, their… [cont.]

  • Man is not willingly a political animal. The human male associates with his fellows less by desire than by habit, imitation, and the compulsion of circumstance; he does not love society so much as he fears solitude. He combines with other men because isolation endangers him, and because there are many things that can be done better together than alone; in his heart he is a solitary individual, pitted heroically against the world.
  • When the Stranger says: "What is the meaning of this city ? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?" What will you answer? "We all dwell together To make money from each other"? or "This is a community"?
  • Anyone who says that society can be run on the basis of everyone's trying to maximize his own greed is talking total nonsense. And to teach it in schools, and to go on television and call it the American way of life still doesn't make it true. Competition and envy cannot become the basis of any society or any community.
