Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "Philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [philosophia], which literally means "love of wisdom".

Is philosophy being concerned in western countries, such as United States?
Q. I am oriental and I am curious about philosophy in western countries. Is philosophy being concerned in western countries, such as United States?
Asked by intellectual - Thu Nov 19 10:15:46 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Few persons in the United States take the time to personally consider or discern their personal philosophy and beliefs, with most simply choosing to follow what they believe everyone else is doing at any given time. Further the study of philosophy in a scholastic setting is seldom the choice of the majority. The ethics of one's self chosen actions are usually only considered after one has either run afoul of the law or has incurred the social wrath of those who disapprove of one's action(s). Philosophy as the same applies to professed (although seldom practiced) religious or spiritual beliefs has all but been totally abandoned and forgotten by the vast majority. Here in the west, if people can't see a way to use the same to make money… [cont.]

For me, this world is full of people who were always divided into two. Regardless their sex or age. I believe that everything in this world, has its ups and downs. A topic or idea is never perfect, and when it is examined by a person, imperfections of it will come out and can be seen. I believe… [cont.]

What is the Philosophy behind Political Correctness?
Q. What is the Philosophy behind political correctness? Is it trying to please everyone? If so what about the phrase "Try to please everyone and you will please no one." If it is about that then it has already failed due to the fact that I personally, and I am not the only one, find it offensive. So what is the Philosophy behind PC, and is it doing it's job? Serious ansers only. Thanks.

A. The basic philosophy behind political correctness is socio-economic justice and progress for all...pursuit of collective wellbeing that is just and fair towards everyone... meaning equitable share in progress rather than equal share. This philosophy is being blatantly overlooked and flouted due to pursuit of power having become the sole objective. In democracies, therefore, it has become a game of looking after the partisan interests of major groups at the cost of the interests of the minor groups, because power is vested in numbers. In other set-ups, it could take the form of alliance with power wielding groups such as the military establishment or the elite class or religious leadership or even a powerful neighboring country. Political… [cont.]

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance." Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
