Applied ethics is, in the words of Brenda Almond, co-founder of the Society for Applied Philosophy, "the philosophical examination, from a moral standpoint, of particular issues in private and public life that are matters of moral judgment". It is thus a term used to describe attempts to use philosophical methods to identify the morally correct course of action in various fields of human life. Bioethics, for example, is concerned with identifying the correct approach to matters such as euthanasia, or the allocation of scarce health resources, or the use of human embryos in research. Environmental ethics is concerned with questions such as the duties of humans towards landscapes or species. Business ethics concerns questions such as the limits on managers in the pursuit of profit, or the duty of 'whistleblowers' to the general public as opposed to their employers. As such, it is a study which is supposed to involve practitioners as much as professional philosophers. Applied ethics is distinguished from normative ethics, which concerns what people should believe to be right and wrong, and from meta-ethics, which concerns the nature of moral statements. An emerging typology for applied ethics (Porter, 2006) uses six domains to help improve organizations and social issues at the national and global level:

GNU Free Documentation License Should I take applied ethics or intro to logic? Q. At my college. I can only take either one of the two this semester, and i really like both. Applied Ethics: This course is designed to provide an introductory background to ethics and an in-depth study of the critical skills necessary to an intelligent analysis of contemporary issues. Emphasis will be placed on the systematic generation of options in order to determine choices for resolving dilemmas. Intro to logic: This course provides students with instruction in the principles of valid reasoning and critical thinking. Topics include deduction, induction, categorical propositions, categorical syllogisms, informal fallacies, construction and evaluation of arguments, the relationship between logic and language, and the differences… [cont.] Asked by Near - Fri Nov 7 16:55:55 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Taking logic first can only help you with your ethics course later. It wont work the other way around. If your objective is to improve thought and reasoning skills... Id also recommend a Critical Thinking course, and a Debate/Rhetoric course if they have them. Id also recommend an extension course beyond Into to Logic, into higher levels of logic... but I have never seen a school that offered such a course independently. Q. Hello everyone, I am an engineering student and I have to bring up an ethical case or question to discuss about in class. Questions that already have been discussed, are: - 'is it ethically alright to take revenge on someone who has hurt you very bad?' - 'if we apply death penalty on mass murderers, doesn't that makes us murderers ourselves?' - 'are we allowed to use violence in our community?' - everything about abortion and euthanasia Can anyone please help me finding a similar case to talk about? I already posted this question yesterday, but the questions they proposed coincidentally were brought up today and not by me (so I have to find another case to talk about).
